PAST & SUBSTITUTE TEACHERS

Maria Sifuentes
Spanish Teacher
I am a native Spanish speaker born and raised in the Treasure Valley area. I will create a community of learners in which my students become empowered and confident, as well as teach me a little something of their own charismatic personalities. Most importantly, they will learn that Spanish will open many doors of opportunity in our society. I am towards the end of receiving my Bilingual Elementary Education/ESL Degree from Boise State University. For as long as I can remember, I have worked and volunteered my Spanish-speaking skills (for example, translating for Spanish speakers in grocery stores whiles buying my own groceries). In other words, my work does not end in a classroom; it is a lifestyle bridging gaps between the worlds of languages. I taught Spanish while I lived in Union City, California, for IES Language Foundation. IES used a Total Physical Response (TPR) Method, which simply is connecting words with motion. It is a natural approach; similar to how infants learn their mother tongue as parents animate what word they are trying to teach. I have also worked as a teacher’s aide in a Head Start program in Boise, Idaho. I created instructional activities (many in Spanish). My classrooms were always filled with non-English speakers from different parts of the world. Therefore, I taught English to those students and Spanish to non-Spanish speakers all through play. It was a fabulous experience.

David Pennington

David Pennington was born and raised in Michoacán, Mexico. He has been a teacher for more than 25 years, including many years as a teacher of Spanish in a variety of classrooms and informal settings. David is the Workplace Spanish Instructor for the Center for Workforce Training for the Larry G. Selland College of Applied Technology at Boise State University. David is married to a bilingual wife. David and Kay raised their three children in a bilingual home. David believes that the opportunity to learn another language is a great privilege; that the ability to communicate in Spanish is a great advantage, especially in this part of Idaho.
